The MCQST Colloquium Series features interdisciplinary talks given by visiting international speakers. The monthly colloquial covers topics spanning all MCQST research units and will be broadcasted live, being made available to audiences worldwide. The main goal of the series is to create the framework for idea exchange, to strengthen links with QST leading groups worldwide, as well as to act as an integral part of the local educational environment.

MCQST Colloquium: Bella Lake

On 1 June 2021, we are excited to invite you to attend the colloquium offered by Bella Lake, Head of Institute EM-IQM at Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin and professor at the Institute for Solid State Physics at TU Berlin.

Neutron scattering studies of quantum magnets

Quantum magnetism studies the behaviour of magnetic materials where quantum fluctuations destroy the properties of conventional magnets such as long-range magnetic order and give rise to exotic behaviours. It is possible to make model materials engineered to exhibit specific quantum properties which can then be studied experimentally. The experimental technique of neutron scattering provides deep insights into properties and allows quantitative comparison to theory as will be illustrated by specific examples ranging from spin chains to frustrated magnets and spin liquids.

About the speaker

Prof. Bella Lake is the Head of the Institute EM-IQM: 'Quantum Phenomena in Novel Materials‘ of Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin, Germany. She obtained her PhD in Physics with Prof. R.A. Cowley from University of Oxford U.K.in 1997. She has previously held postdoc positions at the University of Toronto, Canada, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA and Risoe National Laboratory in Denmark as well as a fellowship at Oxford University and a brief stay at Iowa State University, USA.
