START Fellow Jasmin Meinecke Featured in Re:publica Festival

On Friday 10th of June, MCQST START Fellow Dr. Jasmin Meinecke and Dr. Libby Heaney will present "Living in a Quantum State", an introduction to quantum technologies and a deep-dive into artistic and ethical responses to groundbreaking advances in quantum computing. The session will be moderated by Professor Jens Eisert (Freie Universität Berlin) and is in collaboration with Munich Quantum Valley, as part of the Goethe-Institut’s “Living in a Quantum State” project.

Lecture: "Living in a Quantum State"

Like many others, you may be wondering, what exactly is quantum computing? In the first part of this lecture, Dr. Jasmin Meinecke (Max-Planck-Institute of Quantum Optics) will present an introduction to quantum computing, share up-to-date information about when this technology is expected to be widely implemented and provide examples of how quantum computing could be adopted in digital communication, cybersecurity and AI.

In the second part of this hour, artist and quantum physicist Libby Heaney will highlight the ways in which quantum computing is being embraced by the artistic community. Libby will examine how the arts may help us to understand this complex topic and she will address vital ethical questions which are arising as a result of major advances in quantum computing. She will also speak about some of her work, including her most recent solo exhibition entitled “Ent-” in Light Art Space, Berlin.

At the end, we will have time for a Q&A with the audience.

This hour will be moderated by Jens Eisert, Professor of Quantum Physics at the Freie Universität, Berlin.
